Expertise and high international calibre make Italy one of the favourites.

Andrea Pirlo and Gianluigi Buffon have said Italy have a good chance of winning the World Cup because of the expertise and high international calibre gracing the squad.

"We have many experienced players. I say we are experts, not old. Looking how we can play at high levels for long periods, we can go far in the competition," Pirlo told CNN International.

It's a notion that Buffon agrees with.

"People think we are old because many of the current players were involved in 2006, but I believe that there are no better players than the ones we have," added the goalkeeper.

"To take part in such a competition you need to have the right experience."

Any team who plays Italy will find beating them a tough question to answer, as Pirlo pointed out.

"Italy are difficult to beat in these competitions because we are very organised and the team has been together for a very long time," said the midfielder.

"Marcello Lippi is a serious coach who knows how to create an atmosphere. He is a great coach."

Spain are among the favourites to conquer South Africa, but Pirlo is ready.

"Spain and Germany are good teams, but we can be favourites too," he concluded.
