Former Spanish captain and Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez is giving himself another month before taking a decision on his retirement plans. But, the midfield maestro though did not hold back as he called former arch-rivals Real Madrid lucky in their 3-1 win against Paris Saint-Germain at the Santiago Bernabeu in midweek.
The 38 year old who is a regular feature in the Qatari team Al Sadd’s midfield, just like he was in the Barcelona and Spanish midfield, feels that the scoreline is was an ‘injustice’ towards the Qatari fuelled Parisians.
PSG drew first blood when Adrian Rabiot found the back of the net only for Cristiano Ronaldo to equalize with a controversial penalty to bring up his century of goals in the Champions League as a Real Madrid player.
PSG then controlled the game for a majority of the second before they switched off for a matter of seven minutes and Real took advantage. First Ronaldo popped up and gave his team the lead from close range before Marcelo’s relentless running saw PSG concede a third.
Speaking to So Foot, Xavi said, "Madrid have something. Against them, you can never miss your chance, otherwise they will punish you. But the worst thing is that they hurt the opponent with nothing.”
“A counter-attack is enough for them to take things into their own hands. The game ends and you look at the score and say 'F***, 3-1, how did they do that?”
“You almost think it's an injustice that PSG lost by such a big margin because it was a game that should have ended 1-1, 2-2 or 2-1 for PSG.”
Xavi who has troubled Los Blancos with his exquisite passing and vision on many an occasion opined that for Madrid it was more about ensuring the win instead of playing good football.
Reflecting on the marquee first leg tie from the Round of 16, Xavi pointed out that PSG should have made their moments of dominance count.
"In this match there were several phases, very different from each other, and there was a moment in which PSG dominated clearly and they should have scored a second then.”
“Were Madrid superior to PSG? Not according to me, but Real’s philosophy is not to dominate, but to win.”
PSG will now host Real Madrid in the second leg of the tie on March 6th in Paris when they hope that Neymar and Co can turn things around at the Parc des Princes.
