Montpellier: Schalke clinched top spot in Group B of the Champions League ahead of struggling Arsenal after withstanding strong pressure in the second half to earn a 1-1 draw at French champion Montpellier.
Arsenal's 2-1 loss at Greek side Olympiakos ensured Schalke finished two points clear of the 2006 finalist. Schalke center back Benedikt Hoewedes put the visitors ahead in the 56th minute with a diving header after Christoph Metzelder had nodded Lewis Holtby's free kick back across goal.
Montpellier equalized three minutes later when striker Emanuel Herrera scored at the second attempt after his header had been saved by goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand. Hildebrand made two excellent saves to deny Herrera as Montpellier pushed forward in the closing stages.
At Zagreb, Ivan Krstanovic scored a stoppage-time penalty to earn Dinamo Zagreb a 1-1 draw with Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League on Tuesday. Kiev had already secured a place in the Europa League for finishing third in Group A.
Dinamo Zagreb put its first point on the board after scoring the team's first goal of this season's competition in another humiliating Champions League campaign. Last season, Dinamo lost all six group games. Andriy Yarmolenko opened the scoring with an arching volley from 20 meters in the closing seconds in the first half - amid a relentless snowfall that saw play suspended for 17 minutes before being resumed in the 10th minute.
