Rolling Up Ties
Lay your tie out on a flat surface. Unknot your tie by gently pulling the sides of the knot. Place the tie on the flat surface with the inside of the tie facing up. Flatten out your tie with the small end facing you on a flat surface like a table or an ironing board. Do not roll up your tie with a knot in it or it may get wrinkled. Rolling the tie this way will prevent the front of the tie from getting dirty while you store it.
Fold the tie in half. Fold the thin end of the tie and line it up with the thick end of the tie. Your tie should now be folded in the middle.
Roll the tie from the smallest end. Take the thinnest end of the folded tie and roll it up, towards you. Continue rolling the tie until it’s in a cylinder shape. The inside of the tie should be facing outwards.
Store the tie in a designated drawer. Take the rolled up tie and place it in a designated drawer, like a sock drawer. If you have more than 1 tie, you can place them next to each other. If you don’t have an extra drawer, you can use a ziplock bag to store your ties.
Buy a tie organizer for greater organization. There are tie boxes and tie inserts that fit inside of a drawer. Look online or in a department store to find a box or insert if you want to keep your ties more organized.
Using a Tie Rack
Purchase a tie rack online or at a department store. Some tie racks can hang in your closet while others can be mounted on the wall. Tie racks can be made of plastic, metal, or wood and can usually be hung in a closet. Search online and purchase one that fits your desired style and budget. Tie racks will cost around $5-$20.
Unknot the tie. Gently pull the sides of the knot to loosen it. Pull the thin end of the tie through the untied knot to unravel it. Don’t tear off the tie or you might damage the fabric. Unknotting your tie will prevent you from wrinkling it.
Hang the tie on a rung of a tie rack. You can purchase a tie rack at a clothing store or online. Drape the tie on one of the rungs on the tie rack so that both sides hang over the rack evenly. Hanging a tie on a tie rack will prevent wrinkles and will make the tie ready to wear when you need it.
Store your tie in a dry, cool area. Humidity and heat can damage the fibers in your necktie. Hang the tie in a cool, dry area like a closet or against an interior wall. If you have more than one tie, you can repeat this process with all of your ties. Avoid hanging your ties in areas that regularly get damp, like a basement. Don’t hang the tie on a wall that’s next to a window, where it could get hot from the sun.
Cover the rack with a garment bag to prevent dust buildup. Purchase a plastic or cotton garment bag that is large enough to fit around your tie rack. Open the bag and fit it around the tie rack and then tie or seal it to prevent dirt and dust from settling on the ties. You can purchase garment bags online or at a department store.
