Locate the "trashcan cop", a Combine soldier with serious attitude; he can be found in Point Insertion blocking your path after you have finished talking with Barney. You can't continue without confronting him, so you won't miss him.
Pick up the soda can he drops on the ground. He will tell you to pick it up and put it in the nearby trashcan; you can pick up the soda can by aiming at it with your crosshairs and pressing X on your Xbox 360 controller (E on PC).
Throw the soda can at the soldier instead of disposing of it as requested. To throw the can, make sure you are still holding it before aiming your crosshairs at the soldier and pressing the Right Trigger (LMB/Mouse 1). Make sure you aim precisely, as you will not get the achievement if you do not hit the soldier with the soda can.
Run away or accept the beating he will unleash on you. You can't die yet, so his attacks won't hurt you. Relish this small victory for the free peoples of Earth.
Check your Xbox 360 gamer-score and achievement statistics and you will see that the Defiant achievement has been unlocked for 5 gamer-score. It is represented by the Combine soldier's head with a soda can bouncing off it.
