Amritsar: Kar Sevaks found 114 grenades in the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Tuesday.

Police say that some of them are live while some show signs of rust.

Initial findings suggest that these could be left over during Operation Blue Star in 1984.

The grenades were found in Nanak Niwas, which is in the temple premises and is under construction.

Police are conducting searches, but they say there is no need to beef up security as yet.

"We will look into the matter and find out how these grenades were found," Superintendent of Police Dr. Koshtuvu said.

Operation Blue Star was the codename of a military exercise conducted in the Golden Temple to flush out Sikh militants who had taken illegal refuge in the sanctum sanctorum.

The militants were led by Jarnail Singh Bhinderanwale - the leader of the Khalistan movement and the progenitor of Sikh militancy.
