HYDERABAD: Doctors at the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology have successfully performed a critical surgery and removed almost 12 kgs of tumour from the liver of Vincencia, an young female student from Nairobi, Kenya.Addressing a press conference here on Thursday AIG chairman D Nageshwar Reddy said that the surgery lasted well over three hours and they were able to successfully remove the entire tumour. “She was monitored very closely in our intensive liver care unit and she made an uneventful recovery. The biopsy of the specimen removed confirmed the tumour to be a hamartoma with no chances of recurrence,” they said. The orphan girl had developed a huge liver tumour and faced a lot of humiliation since 2008 as her classmates thought she was pregnant.Investigations at the AIG revealed that the tumour had occupied the entire abdomen, pushing the intestines to one corner. She was taken up for surgery on June 16.The challenges of the surgery the surgery were the enormous size and the possibility of massive bleeding and coagulation problems both during and after surgery.Inspite of all the modern equipment being used, Vincencia lost 13 litres of blood. But with the use of another advanced technology called Cell Saver system, the same blood was replaced in the body. The system sucks every ounce of blood lost during surgery and cleanses them to be later transfused back into the patient.
