KAKINADA: A day after the four storeyed apartment caved in at Shantinagar, the municipal corporation officials have started cracking a whip on all the illegal constructions in the city.
The officials who carried out the rescue operations till the wee hours of Saturday, rescued all the 18 persons, including women and children, who got trapped under it. They are consulting the legal experts to demolish Syamala Sadan which is on the verge of collapse.District collector M Ravichandra directed the corporation officials to identify all the illegal structures in the city and initiate action against the builders and also the town planning officials who permitted these constructions. He also asked the municipal corporation officials to identify the residential and commercial complexes constructed by Pavan Murthy who built Syamala Sadan, and assess their fitness. The disaster response teams evacuated all the families in the apartment and are still monitoring the situation. The residents are taking shelter in the houses of their relatives.

Kakinada municipal commissioner V Ravi Kumar asked the officials to take up a survey to identify illegal constructions in Godarigunta and other areas and demolish them. A meeting will be convened with builders and real estate developers in the city to discuss measures to be taken to prevent such mishaps in future, he said.
