A 1993 Mumbai bomb blast case convict, Munna alias Mohammad Ali Khan alias Manojkumar Bhavarlal Gupta was murdered at the Kolhapur Central Prison, located at Kalamba on Sunday morning.

A prima facie probe by the Kolhapur police revealed that the incident took place after the attendance of jail inmates was recorded around 6:30 am on Sunday.

After the attendance, the inmates were brought to the open space near a water tank at circle number 2 in the prison, an Indian Express report said.

Police have reason to believe that a brawl broke out between Munna and five inmates when he went to the water tank for bathing. During the fight, the accused allegedly hit Munna’s head with a manhole cover repeatedly.

According to an Indian Express report, Kolhapur SP Mahendra Pandit said Munna was murdered by five undertrials who are facing charges under sections of the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

The accused have been identified as Deepak Netaji Khot, Saurabh Vikas Siddha, Pratik alias Pilya Suresh Patil, Sandip alias Bablu Shankar Chavan and Ruturaj Inamdar.

An investigation into the incident is underway.
