ADILABAD: An assistant director of agriculture and a senior assistant in Adilabad district were suspended on Saturday for swindling about Rs 1.72 crore of the crop compensation fund sanctioned for farmers who suffered severe crop damages due to heavy rains and flooding in the Mudhole Assembly constituency during 2009-10. The scam came to light due to the efforts of two activists who filed an application under the Right to Information Act.The commissioner of agriculture issued orders on Saturday suspending Mangilal, assistant director of agriculture at Bhainsa, and his assistant Khaleel Ahmed following an inquiry by vigilance and enforcement deputy director Jhansi Rani. The high court ordered the probe following a petition filed by the two RTI activists, Y Varsha and Y Venkat Rao.According to sources, the government declared Mudhole constituency flood-affected and released Rs 4.72 crore as crop compensation to farmers. Of that, Mangilal, with the help of Khaleel Ahmed, siphoned off Rs 1.72 crore meant for distribution among farmers in Kubeer mandal.
