New Delhi: Two Maoists have been killed and 3 injured in a 12 hour gun battle in Lalgarh in West Bengal.
A fierce gunbattle had ensued on Thursday between the combined forces and Maoists at Laxmanpur, Hatilov and Jhitka near here when the jawans started a combing operation, apprehending that Maoist leader Kishenji and some other important members of Maoist politburo were hiding in the forest areas of Lalgarh and Salboni.
A series of landmine explosion was conducted near Dharampur by the Maoists when the combined forces commenced combing operation this morning. After that the gunbattle ensued between the jawans and the ultras.
West Midnapore District Superintendent of Police M K Varma said a jawan belonging to the Cobra forces received serious bullet injuries during the encounter.
The jawan K.Alwal Singh was brought to Midnapore Medical College and Hospital in Midnapore town in the evening. His condition was stated to be critical.
It was believed that Kishenji, who had been staying in the border areas of Singhbhum District in Jharkhand, arrived in Lalgarh along with his associates and was planning another assault like Silda massacre shortly, the SP added.
