Cops say Santhosh paid the price for his enmity with one of the members of the gang

A seven-member gang was arrested on Sunday for allegedly hacking a van driver to death during a temple festival at Koyambedu. Police said the deceased had attacked one of the accused men a few days ago over a trivial issue and that had developed an enmity that led to his murder.

Police arrested six persons—Kaviarasu (19), Pushparaj (23), Appu alias Prashanth (20), Raghu (19), Lakshmanan, Karthik and Paneer—for allegedly murdering Santhosh (23) of Mettukulam.

Santhosh, a van driver in Koyambedu market, had gone to a temple festival along with two of his friends Murugan (22) and Andrews (21) on Saturday night. Santhosh went to attend nature’s call when the seven-member gang surrounded him and attacked him with sickles.

His friend Murugan, who came to Santhosh’s rescue, was also attacked. Andrews raised an alarm and by the time some devotees came to their rescue, the gang escaped.

Santhosh was rushed to a private hospital and later shifted to Government General Hospital where he died on Sunday morning. Murugan sustained injuries in his neck and was admitted to Kilpauk Medical Hospital. Police said Kaviarasu confessed that Santhosh had attacked him a few days ago over a trivial issue.

Traffic cops suspended for accepting bribes

Four traffic policemen were placed under suspension for allegedly accepting bribes from motorists at Kilpauk on Sunday.

The four policemen were found to be in possession of unaccounted cash by a special police team, which paid a surprise visit while a vehicle check was in progress at the Gengu Reddy Subway in Kilpauk.

As much as Rs 4,500 was found in the possession of the traffic personnel, identified by police as Inspector Alexander of Kilpauk Traffic Investigation and head constables Saravanan, Palani and Shankar.

They apparently collected the money from motorists who failed to produce the requisite vehicle documents after being caught for traffic violations and did not issue receipts for the spot fines.
