JHARSUGUDA: Scarcity of drinking water has turned the 250 inhabitants of Jampara village into seasonal nomads. Every drop seems so precious here as women and children trudge nearly 2 km twice daily to the Ghogharjor nullah. They dredge the dry bed and dig up to four feet for water. Kumudini Kharia (35) said every day at 6 am and again at 3 pm, she and others reach the dry nullah and dig hard for a few hours for underground water. Such is the state of affairs even before the onset of summer. Surrounded by stone quarries, water is scarce here. The lone bore well is of no practical use as the mud-like water stinks. The village is about 22 km from the district headquarters and inhabited by labour class tribal people. Village elder Madhu Kharia (52) said in peak summer they usually migrate to other areas for want of water and return home during monsoon. Jharsuguda BDO Pankaj Pradhan attributed the problem to presence of stone quarries and said the administration would ensure water supply through tanker to mitigate woes of the villagers.
