THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The young crowd has lapped up this unconventional voice. But Saju Srinivas, who crooned the number ‘Theeye theeye’, in Samir Thahir’s ‘Chappa Kurishu’, would wait for things to take their own course and keep a low profile. The high-octane number with a perfect mix of rock and folk, co-sung by an effervescent Sayanora, is slowly climbing up the music charts ever since it was aired on television and radio. It has, eventually, put this city boy on the Mollywood map. Saju, 25, attributes his ‘adventure’ behind the mike to his acquaintance with Rex Vijayan, the lead guitarist and composer of popular Malayalam rock band ‘Avial’, who has also composed two songs for ‘Chappa Kurishu’. Their association started with the rookie band Vidhwan, of which Saju was the lead vocalist, lyricist and composer, and Rex, the mentor. The camaraderie opened fresh doors before him, as he got opportunities to work with some of the experienced musicians in the rock n roll fraternity in the state. He even got the opportunity to perform on stage with the Avial band. An alumni of Mar Ivanios College, he now juggles his time between music lessons and live performances.  According to Saju, his stint with playback singing happened so unexpectedly. “I used to accompany Rex to the studio when the work for ‘Chappa’ was going on. It was then that he asked me to give it a try. I sang and everyone liked it and decided to keep the record,’’ he puts across the whole thing as simple as possible. He has got a dream launch pad; the song has become so popular with the youth; also, it has turned out to be the most viewed Malayalam song currently on the YouTube. But he is unaffected by all the adulation. The fame has not got on to his head. Even on the release date of his debut movie, Saju chose to stay back at his home at Mottammoodu village, on the outskirts of the capital city, listening to his favourite songs and whiling away his time by logging on to social networking sites.  The interesting aspect is, even though the song is gradually climbing up the hit chart, Saju still feels that playback singing is not his forte. “I don’t think my voice is apt for playback singing, nor does it suit any leading stars in the industry,’’ says Saju. But he adds that he has no reservations about doing playback if he does get offers in the future. As of now he has not received any new offers. Nor has he approached anyone for opportunities. Well, he has got reasons for all that. “An unconventional voice is still an unconventional voice. Hence I have decided to wait for right offers to come my way,’’ he signs off.
