KOCHI: The Allopathic medicine and drugs industry was a part of the economic imperialism practised by powerful capitalist countries on weaker countries, social critic Sukumar Azhikode has said. He was speaking at the ‘Aanandasangamam’ organised by Nature Life International here on Saturday. He said the Allopathic industry came to India as a part of the British political imperialism. “These medicines are still called ‘English’ medicines due to this reason. But today, political imperialism is replaced by economic imperialism. But this is often an invisible imperialism. American power does not lie in war but in the industry behind it. The drug industry is one of the largest in America. They have the power to manipulate Senators to make laws in their favour. The weaker countries too are subjected to their will since they need the markets here. Even India no longer enjoys the sovereignty we once had,’’ he said.
