Bengaluru: An online petition has been doing rounds on social media, asking Infosys Founder N Narayana Murthy and his son Rohan Murty to remove American Indologist Sheldon Pollock as chief editor of the Murthy Classical Library.

The library was established in 2015 as an effort to translate over 500 Indian classics into English. Over 130 academics, including many from IITs and IIMs across the country, have started this petition now garnering over 13,000 signatories.

The controversial petition urges the Murthys to re-look at appointing a new editorial board that fits in more with the Make in India ethos and does not "outsource wholesale to American Ivy Leagues".

It further alleges that Professor Pollock is not politically neutral and has shown disrespect to unity and integrity of India, as he was signatory to statements condemning government's action in the JNU row. The Murthys, however, have dismissed the petition as one started by people who haven't read any of the library's publications.
