Reversing its earlier stand, CPI-M in Kerala on Friday decided to field leader V S Achuthanandan for the coming Assembly elections.

Thiruvananthapuram: Reversing its earlier stand, CPI-M in Kerala on Friday decided to field veteran leader VS Achuthanandan for the coming Assembly elections.

The decision to fight the polls with the veteran in the fray was taken by the party's state committee which met in the presence of CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat and three other Politburo members.

Achuthanandan will contest from his existing constituency, Malampuzha.

Karat announced the change of stand of the party at a press conference after the state committee meeting.

The earlier decision to keep Achuthanandan out of eletoral fray had rocked the party through a fresh round of discontent in the last few days.

Karat said the politburo reconsidered its earlier decision in view of the opinions in the party and some confusion created in some sections of the people.

The question who should be the Chief Minister would be decided after the elections as that had been the general practice in the party, he said.
