KOCHI: Acting Chief Justice of Kerala High Court C N Ramachandran Nair emphasised on the status of senior citizens. The senior citizens are suffering neglect and abandonment in social arena, he said. He was delivering the inaugural address at a one-day legal awareness programme and seminar organised by the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS) in association with Kerala State Legal Services Authority on its Kalamassery campus in connection with Mahatma Gandhi’s 142nd birthday and Senior Citizens’ Day. The western concept of nuclear family in the Indian scenario brought about by industrialisation and urbanisation is one of the reasons for the issues of the senior citizens, he said. “Elderly are often considered as unwanted lot by the youth as soon as they siphon off their property,” he said. The acting Chief Justice threw light on the issue of domestic violence also. “Courts alone cannot solve the problem of domestic violence. Our society is such that women are often reluctant to file such cases in the court. The greatest setback faced by women is their economic dependence on men,” he said. But he also noted that divorce rates are on the increase among the educated owing to financial independence. The speakers at the seminar urged the students to follow the principles of Mahatma Gandhi. “All law schools are centres of social service. Through reach out programmes the college must serve the local population. The people of Kalamassery has high expectation from NUALS,” School of Legal Studies director V S Sebastian said.
