New Delhi: An Iranian actress is facing jail and public lashing after a Paris Hilton-style tape of her having sex with her boyfriend became public, a British newspaper said.
The actress, Zahra Amir Ebrahimi, drew the wrath of the authorities after the sex video was leaked on the Internet and a DVD was released. Ebrahimi is one of the best-known actresses in the Islamic country.
According to London's Daily Mail, Ebrahimi made the 20-minute sex tape privately with her boyfriend on a camcorder at the flat that they shared two years ago. Ebrahimi was caught unawares when the tape was posted on the Internet and widely released as a DVD, which angered her country.
Her boyfriend, who has since fled to Dubai, is suspected to have distributed the material illegally. If caught, the man faces three years in jail and a £6,000 fine for offending public morality, the newspaper reports. The authorities have not named the man as yet.
The authorities have also not officially named Ebrahimi for the crime. Yet her name became common knowledge across the country through Internet chat rooms.
Apart from the court punishment, Iranian chief prosecutor Saeed Mortazavihas has also ordered a special investigation in the case.
All of 25, Ebrahimi, one of the best known faces on Iranian TV, has since been dropped from a top-rated television soap where she played a morally upstanding young woman. There were also rumours that she attempted suicide after the incident became public. The actress, however, denied this.
Ebrahimi commanded huge fan following before the incident sent her popularity plunging. Iranian TV networks and filmmakers have immediately decided to boycott the actress and her career appears to be in ruins.
On her part, Ebrahimi has put up a brave face. "I just want to tell my country’s people I am alive. I am thinking about the strength of Iranian women and will defend the respect of the girls and women of my nation," she was quoted as saying.
