A 45-year-old watchman at the University of Madras was found dead in a well on the university campus on Monday.
Sources said students complained of a foul smell in the water and a plumber was asked to check on it. Subsequently, he found that it was emanating from the well where a body was afloat.
Around 2.30 pm, Anna Square police was informed and the concrete lid of the well was broken in order to bring the body out. Police recovered the body and identified it as Babu, who used to loiter near the well regularly, although the body had decomposed badly. It has been sent to the Royapettah Government General Hospital for autopsy.
Babu had been working in the varsity for the past 11 years. He was absent for about a week, according to his colleagues. Since he did not operate the motor for sometime as he used to in the night, someone else from the security detail had been taking care of it.
Babu could have slipped into the well, which has two openings, in an inebriated condition or he could have deliberately jumped into the well, sources said.
Investigation officer R Jareena said Babu was always seen sitting near the well consuming alcoholic beverages. “He had not fought with anyone and had been a loner. He would not even talk to others,” she said. “He was living alone in a house near Chepauk and was unmarried,” she added.
