THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 3rd Kerala Agri-Science Congress for children will be held here on January 20 and 21. Agri-Friends, an NGO which aims to groom schoolchildren as agri-scientists, is organising the event by giving them the opportunity to present their agricultural study projects for evaluation before a panel of agricultural scientists. About 500 students from schools across the state will present papers at the congress on the theme of the year ‘Nammude Krishi’ (Our own farming). That is farming is on land; not in bags or on the terrace. The congress is held every year to generate aptitude among students towards agriculture and related activities like agri-sciences, research-oriented programmes and farming along with their regular studies. The project studies may be based either on any survey done by the students - by a group of five members - or some type of research carried out through experiments. The group can opt for any one method. The details are available in the upcoming website www.agrifriends.org . Online registration will start by December end. The registration form must reach the office latest by January 10, 2012. The best child scientist will receive a cash prize worth Rs 11,111. Seven research projects presented by the school teams will receive commendation. The congress will be held in the Public Library Hall here. A sales counter by the students and an expo also will be organised. Agricultural Minister K P Mohanan, patron of the Agri-science Congress, released the brochure of the event here the other day. Agriculture Department, Education Department, Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment, State Horticultural Mission and some other organisations are also supporting the congress.
