CHENNAI: DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Sunday accused the AIADMK government of throttling democracy by dominating proceedings and breaking conventions of the Tamil Nadu Assembly. In a letter in party organ Murasoli, the octogenarian leader accused the government of muscling legislation without discussing them.Karunanidhi’s statement steered clear of mentioning AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa by name, instead blaming the AIADMK for what he called ‘decay of democracy’. “If anyone has to speak in Assembly today they have to say something against popular schemes of the DMK government. Or they have to denigrate me, a person who has celebrated his golden jubilee in Assembly and served 19 years as chief minister. Otherwise, they will not be allowed to speak,” said Karunanidhi.Noting that the AIADMK was pushing legislation through the House without respect for established conventions and practices such as discussion, Karunanidhi said, “That’s why DMK MLAs are not being allowed to carry out their democratic duties. They are being evicted from the House.”Karunanidhi also alleged that CM Jayalalithaa “criticised the Speaker for not picking favourable questions to be asked in the House. This is a blatant transgression of the conventions of the Assembly.”He added that DMK’s public meetings under the title, ‘The Suffering of Democracy in the Tamil Nadu Assembly’, would continue.
