COIMBATORE:  In a quite decision, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has revamped its regional committees by replacing current heads. New heads and members have been appointed for all the 10 regional committees, with effect from May 20.
In the southern region, Prof R Rudramoorthy, Principal of Coimbatorebased PSG College of Technology, has been named the chairman. He replaces P Mannar Jawahar, ViceChancellor of Anna University in Chennai. This is the first time that an academic from outside Chennai has been appointed as the head of the AICTE Southern Regional Committee in the last decade. According to sources, the AICTE chairman had first nominated Prof B P Sanjay, ViceChancellor of the Central University of Tamil Nadu in Tiruvarur, to head the southern unit. However, he declined to take on the responsibility prompting a change. Curiously, Prof Sanjay has a Mass Communication background and it was not clear why the AICTE chose a nontechnical academician to head the crucial post.

Prof Rudramoorthy has already chaired the meeting of the regional committee held on June 1 on an adhoc basis. However, now his posting shall take retrospective effect from May 20. Strangely, as recently as this week, some media reports had quoted Prof Jawahar on behalf of the AICTE.

"As vicechancellor of the Central University, I have to spend more time building the new university. At the same time if the new post is taken up, one has to devote quality time for attending AICTE's regional meeting when the applications of new and existing engineering colleges are processed. I have my limitations in attending the meeting as I am staying at Tiruvarur, about 325 km away from Chennai."
