New Delhi: Laila Ali wasted little time in retaining her WBC and WIBA world titles, knocking out Gwendolyn O'Neil of Guyana in 56 seconds of the first round in their super middleweight fight on Saturday.
It took only two stiff straight rights from Ali before referee Ian John Lewis counted out the challenger in the 10-rounder.
O'Neil's was similarly knocked out by Ali in the third round in 2004 in Atlanta.
Ali later apologised to fans including former South African President Nelson Mandela for robbing them of a full length fight.
"I would like to thank Gwendolyn O'Neil for coming and having this rematch with me. Like I told her, I had a hard time getting a lot of girls to actually fight me, so, I appreciated her coming back again. I am happy that obviously I won," Laila Ali said after her win.
"I knew that was going to happen and I would have liked for fans to see a little bit more. But that's okay if everything happens as it is it suppose to, and everyone did not want to be seriously hurt, and I know she is not seriously hurt and I told Gwen I like her, we can train, if she is getting ready for another fight, she can come and work with me, so, thank you," Ali added.
