THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A mass drug administration campaign against filariasis will begin in the district on Thursday. Over 17,000 volunteers will cover a little over nine lakh households in the district to distribute Di-Ethyl Carbomazine (DEC) tablets and Albendazole tablets, health officials said. As many as 17,468 volunteers will cover 9.02 lakh homes in the district as part of the campaign. Majority of the cases - as much as 85 per cent - of filariasis have been reported from the coastal areas of the district. A single dose of the medicine distributed will be able to suppress microfilaria levels for a year. Adults will be given three tablets of DEC and one of Albendazole. Children between two years and six years will be administered one DEC, and those between six and 15, two DEC tablets and those above 15 years of age, three DEC tablets. This time, the anti-filariasis campaign will cover government and private hospitals.
