Apple unveiled a computer based on Intel Corp chips, the first to sport the technology since the two announced a tie-up in 2005.

San Francisco: Apple Computer has unveiled its first computers at the Macworld Expo conference based on Intel Corp's chips, the first to sport the technology since the two announced a strategic tie-up last year.

Effective immediately, all iMac computers and the soon to be released Apple laptop, the Macbook Pro will use the new Intel Core Duo processor that was unveiled last week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

"This ushers in a new generation of iMacs," Jobs told the audience. "We started a partnership less than a year ago to make this happen -- it's been incredible how our engineers have bonded and how well this has gone," he said.

Jobs was joined on stage by Intel chief executive Paul Otellini. "The iMac has already been praised as 'the gold standard of desktop PCs,' so we hope customers really love the new iMac, which is up to twice as fast," said Jobs.

"With Mac OS X plus Intel's latest dual-core processor under the hood, the new iMac delivers performance that will knock our customers' socks off," he added.

It features Intel's processors, as well as a built-in video camera, Photocasting support, one-click iWeb publishing, web hosting and Apple remote control system. It is prices in the US market starting from $1,299.

The Intel-ready iMacs will hit the markets on Tuesday and retain the same design, features and pricing as the model released in October.

Jobs said the new models were two to three times faster than the previous model, the PowerPC G5.

In addition, Jobs introduced the MacBook Pro, a PowerBook replacement laptop.

"It's the fastest Mac notebook ever," he said, "and the thinnest." The MacBook Pro, which will ship in February, will weigh 5.6 pounds and be only 1 inch thick.

The MacBook Pro will feature a 15.4-inch LCD display that, Jobs said, "is as bright as our Cinema Displays."

The notebook will also include a built-in iSight video camera, an Apple Remote with Front Row, DVI (Digital Video Interactive) out, one FireWire 400 port, two USB 2.0 ports and an ExpressCard slot.

The notebook will also feature Mag Safe, a new power adaptor connector held onto the case by magnets.

If the cable is tugged, the adaptor will release safely, preventing the possible fall of the notebook.
