Afghan police and army soldiers have been mobilized to join the rescue efforts.
Kabul: Avalanches in north of the Afghan capital Kabul this week have left more than 150 people dead and dozens wounded, an Interior Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday.
"So far rescuers have found 157 dead bodies from Salang Pass," spokesman Zemari Bashary said.
Following heavy snow Monday at the pass that links Kabul and the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif, dozens of avalanches have taken place in the area.
The spokesman said some victims were found frozen to death inside their vehicles trapped under piles of snow, and more are feared to still be buried.
Hundreds of Afghan police and army soldiers have been mobilized to join the rescue efforts, he said, adding that around 2,600 people had been rescued.
