HYDERABAD: GHMC mayor Banda Karthika Reddy has expressed dissatisfaction over the functioning of the health wing of the corporation, especially with regard to ban on plastic. In spite of specific instructions given earlier to all medical officers to strictly enforce the ban on plastic carry-bags of thickness below 40 microns, the orders were not being implemented properly. She gave vent to her feelings at a review meeting held in her chamber on Saturday with additional commissioner (H&S) and assistant medical officers in regard to plastic ban, two bin systems and elaborate arrangements made for ensuing Bakrid. She said petty shops, fruit and vegetable vendors were mainly using carry-bags below 40 microns thick and asked officials to catch the vendors who sell such bags. She observed the use of below 40 microns carry-bags was more in the core areas than in peripheral areas. The mayor advised AMOHs to intensify raids and surprise inspections to bring about a change within a week’s time.If not, she will be forced to undertake surprise inspections herself and to take action against erring officials. She asked AMOHs to encourage residents of colonies in coordination with the Residential Welfare Associations to adopt the two-bin system in their colonies.
