Bengal Farmer Cultivates New Variety Of Mango That Is Available All Year Round
The cultivation of this breed of mango has started in the Malda district of West Bengal.

Mangoes have long been described as a summer fruit in our country. This is because of its availability in the market way more probable in the summer. It is during the summer that the mango tree yields the fruit, but this may change soon enough. Experimental cultivation has been successful, where mangoes yield on trees throughout the year. The cultivation of this breed of mango has started in the Malda district of West Bengal. A mango farmer in Malda has started the cultivation of the mango which is commonly known as Baromasi mango, which in Bengali can be translated to ‘mango for all 12 months’. At present, he has started cultivation of this perennial mango in one bigha of land. The name of this species of mango is Katimon. This species ushers in a new direction in mango cultivation in Malda, a district that is famous for its mangoes. The fruits are sent to other districts of West Bengal from Malda.

While mangoes typically produce fruit twice a year, Katimon mango trees yield mangoes almost every day of the year. The trees never have a period without fruit. As soon as one mango matures, new buds start to form on other parts of the tree. This cycle continues throughout the year, ensuring a constant supply of mangoes. The Katimon mangoes are not only consistently available but also retain a sweet and fragrant taste. Rajeev Rajbanshi from Malda has set a remarkable example by successfully cultivating this type of mango year-round.

Rajeev said, “Not twice a year, this perennial mango tree will bear mangoes throughout the year. I first saw this mango cultivation in Bangladesh on social media. Since then I have wanted to cultivate it myself. We brought seedlings from Nadia and planted them in one bigha of land. Now the trees have started yielding.” Rajiv Rajnbanshi hails from Fulbari village in Pandua Gram Panchayat. He has planted about 100 trees on his land.
