Bharat Ratna awardee CNR Rao retracts 'politicians are idiots' remark
Although he clarified his use of strong words, Rao lamented on the lack of proper utilisation of resources for scientific research.

Bangalore: A day after scientist and Bharat Ratna awardee CNR Rao said politicians are idiots in an angry outburst, he retracted his statement and softened his stand. "It is a very ordinary statement and use of English language," Rao said. "I said we're a bit idiotic in doing things. That doesn't mean people are called idiots," Rao said, adding he did not name anyone specifically.

The eminent scientist had said on Sunday at a press conference, "Why the hell these idiots these politicians have given so little for us. Inspite of that we scientists have done something."

Although he clarified his use of strong words, Rao lamented on the lack of proper utilisation of resources for scientific research. "We have not understood the right requirement and have not used the right support," he said.

He maintained that the onus of contributing to science, technology and innovation lies not just with the government but the industries as well. "Industry is making profit. They should also do something for the people. A small amount of that profit should go for the future of India," Rao stressed.

Rao, Chairman of the Prime Minister's Scientific Advisory Council, was named for India's highest civilian award on Saturday along with Sachin Tendulkar.

Reiterating again on his remarks that created a row, Rao said, "It was all in good humour. I was not angry."
