Varanasi: Banaras Hindu University has sought Central Industrial Security Force(CISF) protection to 'tackle the student problem' said Director General of CISF O P Singh on Tuesday. Addressing the media at its annual press conference, Singh said, “Twenty three educational organisations, including BHU, have sought CISF cover to tackle the problems related to students.”
While local media reports said BHU has sought CISF cover after blasts at Sir Sunder Lal Hospital in May last year, O P Singh insisted that the cover was sought because of volatile student politics in the university.
At least 25 people were injured in a blast in the air-condition’s compressor pipe at the emergency ward of Sir Sunder Lal (SSL) Hospital at BHU in May 2016.
Singh said the request from BHU is pending and CISF is yet to write to Ministry of Home Affairs(MHA) with its view on the matter. "We have not conclusively decided or informed Home Ministry yet. If any other university asks us we will think on the issue," Singh told News18.
Vice Chancellor of BHU G C Tripathi had told news18 in an interview on Monday that he feels students are being misled in the name of student politics. "I think universities are being politicised by some political parties with vested interests. Look what happened with Hyderabad Central University. The issue was deliberately propped up. Was it an actual issue? Who did what, I don’t know, but it was made into a political issue. You tell me what was found about this case after all these months?" Tripathi said commenting on Dalit Ph.D scholar Rohith Vemula's death.
