Patna: Eight people, including at least six policemen and a passer-by, were killed when Maoist guerrillas attempting to loot a bank in Bihar's Gaya district opened fire at a police team that was closing in on them, an official said on Thursday.
The six policemen included five Special Auxiliary Police (SAP) personnel and an assistant sub-inspector. A Maoist rebel also was killed in the gun battle.
Gaya District Magistrate Sanjay Singh said that the policemen were killed by Maoists at Raniganj block.
Dozens of armed Maoists attacked the SAP team near a Punjab National Bank branch in Raniganj block in Gaya district and killed the six policemen in the gun battle.
Maoist guerrillas had gathered near the bank to loot it, the police said. But when the rebels saw a police team moving towards the bank, they attacked and killed six of them, a police official said.
Three seriously injured SAP personnel were admitted at Gaya Medical College and Hospital.
Raniganj block, about 92 km from Gaya town, is known as a Maoist stronghold.
A combing operation has been launched to arrest Maoists involved in the incident.
