In latest development in the Birbhum gangrape case, the Supreme Court on Friday called for records pertaining to the case.

A 20-year-old woman was gangraped in Birbhum district in January allegedly on the orders of a panchayat. The police are suspecting that 13 people were involved in raping the young woman.

She was subjected to the torture for allegedly falling in love with a man outside her community. On failing to pay a fine, she was gang raped on the panchayat's orders.

The police have arrested 13 people including head of the Panchayat in the case. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered the removal of Birbhum SP C Sudhakar over the incident.

Birbhum, where the incident took place, is the home district of President Pranab Mukherjee.
