BJD under fire over tribals shooting
The BJP is blaming CM Naveen Patnaik for not doing enough to control the situation in Jajpur.

New Delhi: The killing of 12 tribals in Orissa's Jajpur district is now becoming a political flash point.

The BJP has threatened to walk out of its alliance with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's BJD in the state.

The BJP is blaming Patnaik for not doing enough to control the situation in Jajpur. State BJP President Jual Oram is coming to Delhi to meet top BJP leaders to discuss the matter.

In a 147-member assembly, the BJD has 64 members while the BJP has 32 MLAs.

Twelve tribals and a policeman were killed in a clash at the Tata Steel office in Jajpur on Monday.

The tribals were opposing the construction of a boundary wall which was being constructed by the Tatas for setting up of a Steel Plant at Kalinga Nagar this morning.

The police initially lobbed teargas shells to disperse the mob but the tribals, armed with bows and arrows, stormed the Tata Steel office compound and attacked policemen.

In the fight that broke out, the tribals hacked a policeman to death and several others were injured.

The police resorted to lathi charge and fired tear gas shells, but it had little impact on the tribals.

The policemen then resorted to firing to quell the rampaging mob, killing 12 of the tribal protestors.
