Bengaluru: Five persons including a woman councillor were on Wednesday arrested for their alleged involvement in BJP activist Vasu murder case by the Bengaluru rural police.
BJP councillor and Dalit leader Srinivas Prasad, popularly known as Kithaganahalli Vasu, was killed on Tuesday morning by assailants who pulled him out of his car and hacked him to death.
The incident happened near Bommasandra south east part of Bengaluru.
Bangalore rural SP Amit Singh informed CNN-News18 that among the arrested is female councillor of Banahalli, Sarojamma (45). The other accused are Madhu (22), Narayanswamy (35), Murali (20) and Manjunath (29).
In a press note issued to the media, the cops claimed the main accused are still absconding. They also informed that five teams have been formed and the accused will be arrested soon.
Sources in the department said this is not a case of "political murder" as claimed by senior BJP leaders. They suspect it could be a case of real estate deal gone awry.
Immediately after the incident, BJP had claimed it was a political murder. And party president BS Yeddyurappa had said, under the present Congress government there has been a complete failure of law and order.
RSS spokesperson Rajesh Padmar had highlighted how in the past two years more than 10 RSS and BJP activists were murdered in Karnataka.
In October last year, the BJP and RSS did a massive protest when activist Rudresh was murdered in a similar manner.
The BJP is planning to launch a protest on Thursday at Mysore Bank circle against Vasu's murder.
"Nothing can be connected at the moment. The matter is still under investigation" said Amit Singh.
