New Delhi: Driven to the back foot in the midst of a high pitch campaign against the Government in the wake of conviction of a union minister in a murder case, the BJP sought to downplay the judgement against Navjot Singh Sidhu, saying this case was hugely different from the JMM leader's.
Immediately after submitting his resignation, the BJP leader, who has been convicted in a case related to the death of a man in 1988 following a brawl, appeared at the daily media briefing at the Parliament House.
Faced with questions whether it was appropriate for him to address a news conference after his conviction, BJP leader Sushma Swaraj maintained that he had already taken a "high moral stand" by quitting as MP in the wake of his conviction.
"The Congress also need not celebrate because there is a huge difference between the conviction of Sidhu and of Soren. Sidhu's case related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder while Soren has been convicted of murder conspiracy," Swaraj said.
She also accused Soren of feigning illness in the wake of his conviction.
"But Navjot Singh Sidhu is boldly facing the media, which is another difference," Swaraj said.
