Lucknow: In a violent clash between the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) workers, one BJP worker was killed on Friday in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district.

The grievously injured worker, who was rushed to Dehradun for specialised treatment, succumbed to his injuries.

A complaint has been lodged, blaming the Saharanpur municipal corporation chairman and Samajwadi party leader, Imraan Masood along with seven others for the attack. Meanwhile BJP workers blamed the police for not acting promptly in the matter.

The clash followed a shutdown call given by BJP workers to mark their protest against an allegedly ‘organised’ attack on them by the newly elected municipal committee chief Irfan Masood and his supporters inside the municipality office on Thursday.

Just as BJP supporters went about urging shopkeepers to keep their shutters down, SP activists started throwing stones at them. Soon the clash turned violent and larger groups took to streets from both sides, with SP outnumbering the BJP.

According to state BJP chief Keshrinath Tripathi, "The police in Saharanpur have been acting like agents of the Samajwadi Party, otherwise they would have taken appropriate action against those who attacked the BJP workers on the floor of the local municipality Thursday."

Saharanpur Superintendent of Police R K Chaturvedi, however, claimed, "We have registered cases against those named by the BJP, but what can we do if we cannot find them."
