Bollywood mourns Naushad's death
Bollywood is in mourning following the death of music composer Naushad who began his career with Prem Nagar in 1940.

New Delhi: Bollywood is in mourning following the death of music composer Naushad. He began his career with Prem Nagar in 1940.

In a career spanning six decades, he composed songs for many Bollywood blockbusters like Uran Khatola, Baiju Bawra, Mother India and Mughal-E-Azam.

Director Mahesh Bhatt said Naushad's greatest ability was to change with times. He said, "Naushad was inspiration to all. He lamented at the end of Indian music. He said that Indian music has lost connection with itself. He was happy that two of his films were recently screened in Pakistan."

Director Akbar Khan's recent release Taj Mahal, was recently released in Pakistan, was his last work as music director.

Credited with introducing classical music into Indian cinema, he composed for 67 Hindi films.

Lyricist Javed Akhtar said that Naushad was a "symbol of composite culture of India. His numbers were either based on classical or folk music. He was also the pioneer in introducing Western musical instruments to Indian music. His contribution to music ia simply awesome."

Naushad had a distinct style of composing music. Singer Hariharan said, “I had the pleasure of working with him. He had a particular style which was cherished by Bollywood. My favourite is his background score for the film, Ganga Jamuna. His songs were definitely class apart.”

Meanwhile, yesteryear’s star, Saira Banu said Naushad was not only a great composer but also had a good sense of humour. She said, “He had a ready answer for every occasion. He mashaallah has a huge family which has always supported him.”

Naushad’s close friend and actor Dilip Kumar was shocked on hearing the news. His wife Saira Banu said, “Dilip saab is very upset and is not ready to talk to the media. Dillip saab has spent a lot of time in the past few years and he will miss him terribly.”
