New Delhi: Bollywood and the South Indian film industry are different from each other but there are actors in both the industries who have similar mannerism and niche audience base. Imran Khan of the Hindi film industry and Jeeva of Tamil films make one such pair with more than one feature in common.
Both come from proper film families. Jeeva's father R B Coudhury is a film producer while Imran's connection to superstar Aamir Khan is well known.
Moreover, they had started working early in their careers as child artists.
Jeeva debuted as hero in 2003 with 'Aasai Aasaiyai' but he received recognition only after a power packed performance in 'Raam'. Big Awards and good films started to follow Jeeva after 'Raam'.
As a result, Jeeva gained prominence in the Tamil film industry. Jeeva showcased his versatility via unconventional roles. He played a stuntman in 'Dishyum' (2006), slum dweller in 'E' (2006) and a psychopath in 'Kattradhu Thamizh' (2007).
Commercial success was also not very far. 'Siva Manasula Sakthi' (2009) and 'Ko' (2011) established Jeeva as a bright future prospect.
On the other hand, Imran did not have to go through a rough struggling phase as 'Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Naa'(2008) became an instant hit. Further the film won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.
Flops such as 'Kidnap' (2008) and 'Luck' (2009) presented some doubts on Imran's abilities but he was continuously improving as an actor. Moderate success of 'I Hate Luv Storys' (2010) and 'Break Ke Baad' (2010) gave futuristic producers the courage to back the newcomer who still had relationship with Aamir Khan as his best asset.
Then came marketing gimmicks 'Delhi Belly' (2011) and 'Mere Brother Ki Dulhan' (2011) and Imran got into the exclusive league of 'hit' actors.
This was the same time when Jeeva was hitting jackpot with 'Ko', 'Rowthiram' and 'Vandhaan Vendraan'.
Today both of them seem to enjoy the same position where the audience is expecting them to appear in experimental and path breaking roles.
Jeeva has done a fabulous job in 'Ko' but Imran needs to put extra efforts to get out of his typical chocolate boy image.
Jeeva's 'Mugamoodi' and 'Nanban' (Tamil version of '3 idiots') are under production while Imran's 'Ek Main aur Ekk Tu'and 'Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola' are all set to hit screens in the near future.
Which so ever actor wins the race, the spectator will always remain the winner.
