CHENNAI: A demonstration urging the Union government to bring back black money stashed away in tax havens was held here on Wednesday.Organised by Youth Against Corruption, protestors sought effective steps to root out corruption from the country. Retrieving black money from foreign countries should be a priority for the government, they said.R Rajkumar, state coordinator, YAC, said an estimated `6,55,20,000 crore black money was being illegally held in foreign countries.“If this money is brought back to India, it would be a boon to our people in 6,34,000 villages. Each village could be easily allotted over `100 crore for welfare measures, development of the basic amenities and infrastructure,” he said.Tracing successive scams like the Adarsh, Common Wealth Games and 2G Spectrum, the YAC leader said the real culprits should be brought to book which alone would reinforce the faith of the people in democracy.Urging the Centre to table the Jan Lok Pal Bill in the Parliament, he wanted the Centre to “act firmly against corruption, the corrupt and those abetting them.”The demonstration was held in front of Panagal Building in Saidapet. Agitations were held simultaneously by the YAC in Madurai, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli. Similar agitations will be held by YAC on Thursday and Friday in the city, organisers said.
