BANGALORE: Appreciating the cultural and historical heritage of Karnataka, Governor, H R Bhardwaj, called upon the Archaeological Survey of India to come up with a comprehensive book on Karnataka’s monuments and cultural heritage. Inaugurating the 150th anniversary celebration of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on Friday, he said, “Karnataka has a rich cultural heritage but the major drawback is that it has not yet travelled to other parts of the country. The ASI should bring out a book which will provide information about the historical heritage and ancient monuments of the state, so that it gets transmitted across the country. Accordingly, citizens can also help in preserving these monuments.”“This year, megalithic group of monuments at Hire Benekal, egalithic burials of Dodda Molte and Suli Molate, Hoysala monuments of Belur, Halebid and Somanathapur are on the tentative list, to be sent to the ASI, New Delhi, which will be further sent to the UNESCO for enlisting it in the World Heritage Site”, said, G S Narasimhan, superintending archaelogist. “Meanwhile, we are also looking at introducing comprehensive heritage management plans in the State, among which youth leadership scheme, bringing students in the forefront who would take initiative for preserving the heritage sites” he said.To mark the celebration, the website of Dharward and Bangalore ASI: www.asidharwardcircle.org and www.asibangalorecircle.org were launched respectively. On the occassion, eminent archaeologists, Dr S R Rao, Dr M S Nagaraja Rao, Dr K V Ramesh, Dr S H Ritti, Dr A Sundara, Dr A V Narsimhamurthy, Dr K P Poonacha, Dr Subbaraman and C T M Kotriah were felicitated. Related celebration will continue till November 2012.
