BANGALORE:  The four-year Bachelor of Scinece (BS) was launched in Bangalore University in a grand way. However, amidst all the extolment it received, the course is being conducted at Jnana Bharathi campus without proper facilities. Classes for I and II semester students are being run in the new guest house, with no laboratories or furniture for faculty. The New Indian Express visited Jnana Bharathi for a reality check and found that the makeshift location for the BS course did not meet claims of international standards that have been made of late.  “Currently, we are not having the facility of Biology lab and the equipment of other respective labs were provided to us after the progression of nearly three months of the semester. The required materials for the labs are unavailable. The infrastructure is very poor,” said a II semester on condition of anonymity. The makeshift department for the 4-year BS course is housed in the new BU guest house which was inaugurated by Justice N Santosh Hegde in May 2008 when Dr H A Ranganath was the Vice-Chancellor. Without an independent building for the course, students have no other option than accommodating themselves in small guest house classrooms. Students and faculty further complained that the course coordinators Dr M Shankar Reddy and Dr R Rajesh were unavailable most of the time. “They visit us once in 10 days, or twice in a month. With the immediate link in the hierarchy unavailable, we are forced to bypass them for our grievances,” said a faculty member. It is also learnt that some of the faculty members are functioning without appointment orders, resulting in irregular classes and delay in completion of syllabus. “Our batch was supposed to be following the academic batch of 2010-11. But we are lagging behind by six months, which is not being compensated. The calendar of events is not being followed,” said a I semester student. While Vice-Chancellor Dr N Prabhu Dev was unavailable for comments, Registrar Dr B C Mylarappa told Express that he would look into the issues seriously. “The students have written to me about all this. It is unfortunate that this course lacks the infrastructure that it deserves. I will discuss with the VC and decide on the corrective action to be taken,” he said.
