BANGALORE: While across the country, only 10 to 15 per cent of the total used water falls under Unaccounted For Water (UFW) category, the Bangalore city alone loses 36 per cent water due to leakage. In an attempt to overcome this problem, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has planned to implement UFW project on a pilot basis, which will be first introduced in Bangalore South. BWSSB plans to replace domestic service connections irrespective of its working condition. Further, all domestic service lines made of galvanised iron will be replaced with medium density polyethylene which has a life span of nearly 50 years. This will not only ensure in reduction of water wastage but will also reduce water contamination.“The pilot project aims to bring down the water wastage in Bangalore from 36 per cent to 16 per cent. Hopefully, the Centre will approve the implementation of the project in South Bangalore,” said Minister for BWSSB  S Suresh Kumar. The water board has invested `180 crore in this project which will spread across 56 square kms. “Our aim is to reduce water leakage, which will help in solving water  crisis during summer. If the project turns out be successful, it will be adopted in other areas too. Cauvery IV Stage II Phase project will be ready by June,” Kumar said. The pilot project will be implemented in Basavangudi, Padmanabhanagar, BTM Layout, Chamarajpet and Jayanagar constituencies, according to sources in the  Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board.
