BANGALORE: In keeping with its reputation of being the IT capital of the country, Bangalore will soon have a world class International Convention Centre near Bangalore International Airport. The state Cabinet on Thursday approved the setting up of the centre, which would come up in a 35 acre plot at the cost of Rs 250 crore.Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister S Suresh Kumar told reporters that the centre was likely to be the largest one in South India and it would be mainly used to host international conferences and industrial events.The minister said the convention centre will come up in 18 months and will have a convention hall with a seating capacity for 6000 people and 20 small conference halls that can accommodate 50200 people. Also, there will be an exhibition centre.He further said the project will be partly funded by budget allocation, while the remaining funds would be mobilised by the state-owned Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB).The project is being expedited taking a cue from Hyderabad, which is attracting a lot of international conferences and exhibitions after building an international convention centre.Keeping in mind the increasing number of road accidents, the state government has decided to open two driving schools, one in Bangalore and another in Dharwad.The Cabinet has given approval for setting up of these schools. Each school will be built at the cost of Rs 12 crore and will have infrastructure facilities like driving tracks and hostel facilities.While the government would provide all the infrastructure, private firms would run these schools on PPP model.Those who wish to learn driving of heavy vehicles can join these schools. People can also join to improve their driving skills, Suresh Kumar said.Intelligent transport systemThe cabinet approved KSRTC's proposed plan to implement the intelligent transport system (ITS) for Mysore city under Sustainable Urban Transport Programme of the Centre.The project plan covers 500 buses, 80 bus stops, and 10 bus terminals. "It will have several components including vehicle tracking system, central control station, passenger information management system and fleet management system," Suresh Kumar said. The proposed cost of the project is Rs 19.13 crores.
