PARADIP: The bandh call given by the trade unions (TUs) on Tuesday to protest ‘anti-labour’ policies of the UPA Government hit works in Paradip Port, IFFCO, Paradeep Phosphates Ltd, Essar Steel Limited and IOCL.TU activists staged a demonstration in front of the administrative buildings of Paradip Port Trust and the port harbour besides other companies. Construction works in Essar and IOCL were disrupted. Cargo operation in the Paradip Port was severely affected. PPT Traffic Manager Saroj Kumar Mishra said as many as 12 vessels had berthed at the port harbour on Tuesday. “While cargo operations for four vessels were over in the morning, the work was affected in the remaining eight with trade unions staging a demonstration in the harbour,” he said.Transportation of fertilisers was also affected as railway services were paralysed on the Cuttack-Paradip route. IFFCO Executive Director M R Patel said production in the plant would resume on Wednesday. Life was hit in the district with business establishments downing their shutters and offices remaining closed. SP S Devdatta Singh said no untoward incident was reported.No Impact in AngulAngul: The bandh had no impact on the industries here although work in banks and LIC offices was paralysed. Coal mines in Talcher functioned normally except for minor disturbances at some places. The coal dispatch was normal.Earlier, two major coal trade unions _ INTUC and HMS _ had declared that they would not stall production since it is peak time for the production.The two NTPC plants functioned normally. The TU leaders staged a demonstration in front of the Talcher Thermal Power Station in the morning.Likewise, works in smelter and power plants of NALCO were not affected.Coal Mining NormalRourkela: TU leaders took out a rally from Bisra Square and detained Utkal Express at the railway station here. They then proceeded towards Udit Nagar where they courted arrest. Prominent among them were Odisha unit CITU general secretary Bishnu Mohanty and State AITUC working president Pravat Mishra. Mishra claimed iron ore mining at the Koida mining sector and coal mining at MCL at Basundhara were affected along with closure of private industries. However, SAIL sources at Koida’s Tensa and Barsuan mines claimed production was normal. Similarly, MCL spokesperson Dikken Mehera said coal production at Basundhara mines was unaffected. There was no disruption of work in Rourkela Steel Plant.
