The Hobbit by JRR Tolkein

The upcoming film series, ‘The Hobbit’ consists of three epic fantasy-adventure films directed, co-written and produced by Peter Jackson and based on J R R Tolkien’s fantasy novel. The films in this series are, An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and There and Back Again (2014). The movies will star Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, with several other actors like Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee and Ian Holm reprising their roles from ‘The Lord of the Rings’.

Initially published in 1937, ‘The Hobbit, or There and Back Again’ popularly known as ‘The Hobbit’ is Tolkein’s prelude to ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy. The hole, the Hill, a class of small, hairy people - the hobbits- all feature in the book. This is a delightfully imaginative story about a quest taken up by Bilbo Baggins with Gandalf and the dwarfs. Like most Hobbits, Baggins, too is comfort-loving, laid back with not much desire for an adventure. As the opening chapter puts it, “This is a story of how a Baggins had an adventure, found himself doing and saying things altogether unexpected.” For all those ‘Lord of the Rings’ fans out there, do not miss out on this one before the movie hits the screens.

The Life of Pi by Yann Martel

The 3D adventure film based on the 2001 novel is scheduled to hit the screens in November, 2012. The film is directed by Ang Lee, who has directed Academy Award-winning movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Brokeback Mountain (2005). Suraj Sharma will play the role of Pi.

Winner of the Man Booker Prize in 2002, this book by Yann Martel traces a tragic ship-wreck in the Pacific ocean and the adventures of a 16-year-old Indian boy Pi. Piscine Molitor Patel, Pi for short, grows up in Pondicherry, where his father is a zookeeper. Pi’s family decides to set off to Canada and board a Japanese cargo ship along with some of the animals from their zoo. The ship sinks and the boy is left stranded in mid-ocean in the company of a hyena, zebra, a 450-pound Bengal tiger Richard Parker and an orangutan. His survival skills are what gets him through 277 days at sea with a hungry tiger named Richard Parker, with whom he eventually develops a friendship.

Carrie by Stephen King

Carrie is Stephen King’s first published work. The movie to be released in 2013 is the third adaptation of this book published in 1974, having had  film adaptation in 1976 and 2002.  Kimberly Peirce will direct the movie based on a screenplay by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. The cast will include Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore and Judy Greer. The supernatural thriller has already been listed among the ‘Most Anticipated Movies of 2013’.

Carrie White is a shy high school girl who finds herself teased and bullied at school. She is raised by her mother who mistreats her and subjects her to strange religious beliefs. What moves the story forward is Carrie’s newly-discovered telekinetic powers that she uses to strike vengeance on those who ridicule her at school.

Interestingly, three other novels before ‘Carrie’ were not accepted by publishers. He actually threw the only draft of this book into the trash can, but his wife Tabitha fished it out and rescued it.
