CHENNAI: A demand has been made to rename the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) as the Indian Board of Film Certification or even Classification in order to emphasise the board’s role of certifying and classifying films instead of regulating and censoring them. The name change has been recommended to the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry by chairperson of the certifying body, Leela Samson. Stating this at the valedictory session of FICCI’s two-day Media and Entertainment Business Conclave on Friday, Leela Samson reiterated that the change was required to keep with the board’s role as a facilitator, and not a regulator of the film industry.Speaking about the Tamil film industry, Leela observed that many film producers wished for a ‘U’ certificate  regardless of their film’s content. This was because films which obtained a ‘U’ certificate were eligible for entertainment tax exemption in the State. Another problem faced is that many filmmakers were submitting dubbed films as straight Tamil films in order to get tax exemption, she said. Leela also reiterated that the CBFC was an apolitical body, and filmmakers should keep out political agenda while approaching it.
