To add cheer to the festive season ahead, an all Anglo-Indian album of Christmas favourites has been released in Chennai for the very first time. Twelve songs, 10 singers and some hectic schedules later, 'Kul-kuls and Rose Cookies' was ready. This quirky name is a tribute to the popular Christmas sweet as well as to the proud residents of Perambur who made them popular."We've got so much talent within our community, given the number of gigs we play during the Christmas season. Somehow, an album never came together until now," admits Barry D'Rosario, musician and co-producer. Also a part of the production is Orlando and Darren Netto from popular bands Medium Rare and White Lady. "So, when an idea like this came up this October, we decided to go for it," Orlando adds. While the genres of the songs are mostly Rock 'n' Roll and Country, there are a few slow numbers as well to keep the balance right. The trio is unanimous when it comes to disclosing their favourite song -- When a Child is Born. "We had 10 of the best Anglo Indian voices that we know of come together for this song," says Darren. He further explains, "We recorded 82 individual tracks and gradually blended them together for this piece. It took us 10 days to complete this one song."Other favourites that you can listen to are White Christmas, Jingle Bell Rock and of course an upbeat, Santa Claus is Coming to Town. The last one has been sung by 75-year-old Tony Watts, the oldest member of the project. Orlando elaborates, "We have this event called 'Elder's Night' for senior citizens in the community to show off their talent, and last year, Tony won." He adds, "Tony is really good. So, we invited him on board. Plus, he has a unique Cliff Richards's kind of voice that is very rare."As a rock 'n' roll style Run Run Rudolph plays loudly in the background, there is little doubt that this album will have people on their feet, with or without their dancing shoes. And the band agrees. "We guarantee that if you play this album somewhere, it will have all the Anglo-Indians in the room up and jiving," says an enthusiastic Orlando. Why? "Because we love to dance!" ('Kul-Kuls and Rose Cookies' is priced at `200. The album is available at Shruti Musicals and Bob Fashions at Perambur. For more details, call 9789097530.)
