CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation Council is expected to vote on some key issues that could have significant impact for city residents when it sits for its first Council meeting since the civic body’s budget session. Tuesday’s session will also be the first meeting of the Council since the shake-up in the Corporation’s ranks, in which D Karthikeyan took charge in his second stint as the civic body’s head bureaucrat. In what could signify a paradigm shift, the Council is expected to vote on the conversion of 50 of its schools into English medium. This is a quantum leap ahead from the English-medium sections it runs in 69 schools, covering a total of about 2,100 children. According to sources, the civic body has been mulling such a move for quite a while now, and the idea has now borne fruit.A resolution introducing a walk-in-and-pay facility for the collection of property tax at any branch of 13 banks across the city is also expected to be tabled. The move has been aimed at making it easier for residents to pay their dues, as well as address certain logistical wrinkles for the Corporation. The Council is also expected to vote on some key decisions regarding road works in eight of the Corporation’s 15 zones, apart from the remainder of the plastic roads project. The resolutions tabled in the Council are expected to be passed with little opposition, given the brute floor majority of the AIADMK in the Council. Some questions tabled by councillors during the budget session are also expected to be taken up during the session.
