Chennai: Days after a circular allegedly issued by an engineering college in Chennai went viral on social media, a group of students carried out a protest against the strict dress code imposed on them on Tuesday. Several students of Sai Sri Ram Engineering College have been detained for staging a road blockade in the city against the strict dress code.
Students say heavy fines are being imposed on girl students who wear leggings or jeans or even if they speak to boys in class.
An angry student, Sairam said, “There is a fine for everything from dress code to walking and standing. If you see they have a rule on how the buttons should look and how the collar should look. We weren’t allowed to wear stretch pants to college. If boys talk to girl students they think it is wrong. This is terrible."
The protest comes just days after this circular went viral on social media banning girl students from wearing leggings, short kurtas and tight tops. The special instructions for girls also included no mobile phones, no Facebook and WhatsApp.
College authorities have, however, denied issuing the circular.
Reacting to this, Professor Maran, who is also director of the college said, “This circular - some culprits wanted to use our college name. Is our college letter head and seal there? This has been misrepresented. We aren't against boys or girls. We want our students to excel in the world."
With several colleges in Tamil Nadu enforcing a strict dress code policy students say they plan to intensify their protests until the management withdraws their draconian policy.
Here is what the circular said:
Big "NO" for girls
1. No legging/tight pants and tops
2. No shirt kurta
3. No knot type (backside) tops
4. No "Loose Hair" hairdo
5. No big size stud or ring
6. No very high heels and no fancy slippers
7. No patialas/anarkalis (which will hide leggings) and high fancy dresses with netted designs
8. No hair colouring
9. No transparent and short duppatta
10. No banyan cloth type pant
11. No designer watch appearing big in size and in different colours.
12. No guardian will be allowed to meet the hostel students
13. Two sides of duppata should be compulsorily pinned up
14. No celebrations like birthday, new year and other functions in college campus
15. Should not bring sweets, cakes, chocolates and other snacks in bulk quantity to share with friends.
16. No loitering in the corridors unnecessarily
17. Should now enter other classes during class hours for borrowing books, lab coats and other items
18. Should not bring mobiles, pen drives, sim cards etc
19. Should not bring two-wheeler and four-wheeler
20. Should not account on Facebook, WhatsApp and other related types of this kind
21. Should follow allotted staircases and footpaths
22. Should not talk to boy students
In general girls are advised to come in a neatly dressed manner. Day scholars are advised to come their respective boarding points 5 minutes ahead of their bus schedule.
